Our family traveled to Florida when I was younger. We'd always stop at McDonald's, and my father was amazed at all the different cars from the different states, full of families going there to eat. My father said this would be a great franchise to own.
After I graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1982, I went to work for Arthur Young in Dallas. However, I wanted to own my own business. So, my father and I applied for a McDonald's franchise in 1996 when I was 26 years old. I was accepted into the training program. My father helped me during the training, we both worked over 2000 hours in a store for no pay. I graduated from Hamburger University in 1989.
My father and I then looked for potential restaurants all over the country and eventually bought one in Bridgeport, WV, in 1990. I inherited a store that required a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun. My father and I worked pretty consistently, seven days a week. We then were awarded our second store in Shinnston in 1992 and built Nutter Fort in 1995. Our organization now has grown to 40 stores with locations in West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
It' has been a wonderful journey, fueled by tremendous employees who are very engaged in our business.
